  • Philipp Ludwig Scharwenka (1847-1917)
  • Frühlingswogen Op.87
  • Arcadian Suite, in B major Op.76
  • Liebesnacht Op.40
Framförd av: Gävle Symphony Orchestra - Christopher Fifield
Three orchestral works with literary allusions by the brother of the well-known Xaver Scharwenka. These are pieces that show a more contemplative character than most of his brother’s works, from the eerily beautiful Frühlingswogen (after Turgenyev) to the delicate Liebesnacht, a theme from Tristan und Isolde.

  • Funeral March
Framförd av: Dan Larsson / Erik Rapp / Andreas From / Staffan Mårtensson / Östgöta Blåsarsymfoniker - Olof Boman
Here are some delicate concertos recorded by the excellent Östgöta Symphonic Wind Ensemble. They have a long tradition of playing their local composer Bernhard Crusell – a stylish early Romantic well-known also for his three clarinet concertos.

Franz Xaver Schnyder von Wartensee
CDS-1073-2
EAN: 7393338107323
Prisgrupp: GA1

  • Franz Xaver Schnyder von Wartensee (1786-1868)
  • Symphony No.3, ‘Militärsinfonie’
  • Overture in C minor
Framförd av: Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen - Christopher Fifield
Schnyder vonWartensee was an early Romantic, and a good friend of Beethoven. His music is typical early Romantic – perhaps more like Haydn and Schubert than Beethoven. Some rather weird twists in the symphony makes one believe that there was perhaps stronger stuff than milk in that ‘Suppe’. Lovely, engaging performance typical of Fifield and theWürttembergische Philharmonie.

Paul Dukas
CDS-1074-2
EAN: 7393338107422
Prisgrupp: GA1

  • Paul Dukas (1865-1935)
  • Symphony in C major
  • Goetz de Berlichingen, overture
  • Le Roi Lear, overture
Framförd av: Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen - Fabrice Bollon
Paul Dukas’ oeuvre is very small, due to his (overly?) self-critical approach. The Symphony in C major was nonetheless a piece that the composer cherished. Here it is complemented by two great overtures that he wrote in his student days, both modelled on examples from famous literature, by Goethe and Shakespeare. Both are world première recordings. This is a release that makes you regret that Dukas destroyed so many of his own works.

Joachim Raff
CDS-1075-2
EAN: 7393338107521
Prisgrupp: GA1

  • Joachim Raff (1822-82)
  • Violin Concerto No. 1
  • Suite for Violin and Orchestra
  • La Fée d’Amour
Framförd av: Tobias Ringborg, violin / Symphony Orchestra of Norrlands Opera - Andrea Quinn
The Swiss/German composer JoachimRaff has undergone something of of a revival in the last few years, and these recordings of works for violin and orchestra amply demonstrate why. Raff's own version of his First Violin Concerto was only rediscovered a few years ago, and it receives its première on this CD. An excellent essay by the leading Raff expert Dr Avrohom Leichtling tells the fascinating story of the concerto’s history. It is joined by La Fée d’Amour, a classic short Konzerstück of the type so commonly found in the nineteenth century, and the Suite for Violin and Orchestra, based on themes frombaroquemusic.

  • Helmer Alexandersson (1886-1927)
  • Symphony No.2 in G minor
  • Overture in C minor
Framförd av: Uppsala Chamber Orchestra - Paul Mägi
Here is nothing less than a Swedish Tchaikovsky! A very talented Romantic Swede with a gift for massive writing and large chorale melodies with a very personal touch – although influenced by Tchaikovsky in his impassioned writing!

Friedrich von Flotow
CDS-1077-2
EAN: 7393338107729
Prisgrupp: GA1

  • Friedrich von Flotow (1812-83)
  • Piano Concerto No.1 in C minor
  • Piano Concerto No.2 in A minor
  • Wilhelm von Oranien in Whitehall, incidental music
  • Jubel Overture
Framförd av: Carl Petersson, piano / Pilsen Philharmonic Orchestra - Hans Peter Wiesheu
An entirely new perspective on Friedrich von Flotow’s compositions. This composer is best known on account of his operaMartha. Here we find newly discovered concertos, which must be considered as sensational. The first is brilliant andmelodic, the second is probably influenced by CarlMaria vonWeber’s concertos. The Oranien suite ismost charming, with Thomas Arne’s Rule Britannia as one of themovements.

Richard Franck
CDS-1078-2
EAN: 7393338107828
Prisgrupp: GA1

  • Richard Franck (1858-1938)
  • Orchestral Works
  • Symphonic Fantasy Op.31
  • Serenade for Violin & Orchestra Op.25
  • Suite for Orchestra Op.30
  • Liebesidyll 'Amore und Psyche' Op.40
  • Seenade für violoncello und Orchester Op.24
  • Wellen des Meeres und der Liebe Op.21
Framförd av: Fabian Wettstein, violin / Tim Struble, violoncello / Wurttembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen - Christopher Fifield.
Prokofiev at one time described his classical symphony as written in the style as if Haydn would have survived into the 19th Century. If one could imagine Beethoven one hundred years adopting a fullblown romantic style -then you can imagine the music of Richard Franck. He was the son of another important composer: Eduard Franck (1817-1893). Richard's music is traditional in style, well-crafted and with memorable melodies. The Beethoven connection is very obvious in the first piece and very much in the Violin Serenade.

  • Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
  • Septet in E Flat Op.20 (arr. Crusell)
Framförd av: Ostgöta Blåsarsymfoniker - Olof Boman
The second wind-band Crusell release from this label offers a 13-minute folk song potpourri (one of the composer’s last works, dating from 1836) and his arrangement of Beethoven’s well-known septet (when done and for what purpose the notes leave us in the dark).
